Esophageal Cancer and How to Prevent It? : Foods to Prevent Cancer of Esophagus

The prevalence of cancer of the esophagus is on the rise and is closely linked with faulty dietary practices. This article shares information about the predisposing factors which result in esophageal cancer and certain foods and diet suggestions that can help in prevention of esophageal cancer whilst enhancing the overall immune system capacities.

Cancer of the esophagus is characterized by anomalous and uncontrolled growth of the esophageal cells at a rapid rate, resulting in the formation of a tumor mass. Prognosis for esophageal cancer primarily depends upon when the diagnosis is made and the stage of the malignancy.

 What Causes Cancer of Esophagus?

 Here are some predisposing factors that have been associated with development of cancer of the esophagus,

  • Smoking: tobacco consumption is a significant risk factor for cancer of the esophagus is smoking. Smoking a pack of cigarettes daily doubles the risk.  
  • Alcohol: Consuming too much alcohol is another important risk factor.  
  • Obesity: Obesity significantly steps up the peril of developing cancer of the esophagus. 
  • GERD: As per the American Cancer Society states that about 30 % of esophageal cancer cases are linked to gastro-esophageal reflux diseases. 
  • Barrett's esophagus: This is a medical condition in which there occurs reflux of acid from the stomach in to the lower part of the esophagus. Those diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus are 50 times more prone to esophageal cancer. 
  • Certain disease conditions: Certain disease conditions are known to increase the risk of developing cancer, these are - achalasia and tylosis. Achalasia is characterized by a difficulty in letting the food to pass through the esophagus in to the stomach, thereby, keeping the food in the lower segment of the esophagus. Tylosis is a genetic disorder that is rather rare.

 Pickled Vegetables and Esophageal Cancer: Diet and Cancer

Research states that although pickles are extremely popular, they are not healthy food options. Not only are they loaded with sodium; they also are high in cancer-causing compounds.

Laboratory investigations have demonstrated that pickles have a very high amount of N nitroso compounds. These compounds have the potential to form cancer-causing compounds called nitrosamines.

What’s more, clinical trials have clearly shown a strong connection between eating of pickled vegetables and esophagus cancer.

 Foods that Prevent Cancer of the Esophagus

Here are certain foods and dietary recommendations that can be beneficial in preventing cancer of the esophagus,  

  1. Carotenes: carotene is a potent anti-oxidant exerts a remarkable anti cancer effect. Carotenes protect the thymus gland from damage. They facilitate the most favorable thymus gland activity by checking damage and injury by free radicals and pro-oxidants. Furthermore, they enhance the working of the white blood cells and intensify the anti cancer properties of our immune mechanism. Tomatoes, carrots, bell peppers, mangoes, pumpkins, papayas, and spinach are excellent sources of the nutrient. 
  2. The cruciferous family: cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, turnip, kale, and mustard greens belong to the cruciferous family; they are packed with powerful anti cancer compounds. Research says, 1 kg of the cruciferous family is advised per week to keep cancer at bay. 
  3. Yogurt: has the capacity to fortify our immune system significantly. Yogurt enhances the ability of the immune cells to encase, ingest, and wipe out cellular damage. It is also effective in managing indigestion.                                                       
  4. Lime:  limes are loaded with vitamin C, an anti-oxidant that boosts optimal immune system functioning. Vitamin C amplifies WBC function and activity profoundly. Vitamin C battles stress effectively; and stress has long been a noteworthy determining factor in the development of cancers. 
  5. Green tea: green tea is full of polyphenols. Polyphenols are strong anti oxidants and cancer fighting compounds. They are powerful free radical scavengers and destroyers and help ward of the occurrence of cancer.
